Brenda Marcella BENSON Brenda Marcella Benson, 66, of Germantown, TN, passed away February 26, 2011 at Baptist Memorial Hospital- Memphis. Born in Memphis, TN March 12, 1944, she was a member of the first graduating class of Overton High School, and later a graduate of Memphis State University. She was a 26 year employee of Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, during which she won the President’s Club Award six times and was named Distinguished Sales Representative. She enjoyed her many trips to various countries around the world, and had a special love for animals. She was preceded in death by her father, Taylor Marcel Benson, and her sister, Linda “Bennie” Stratton. Survivors include her two sons, Daniel Benson Straatmann and Matthew Christopher (Brittany) Straatmann; one sister, Patricia Ann Benson; her mother, Marguerite Bertha Benson; three nieces, Erin Elizabeth Stratton, Kelly Halle Benson Stratton Carter, and Robyn Patrice Mastry; and one granddaughter to be, Marcella Taylor Straatmann.

Larry W. COOPER Larry Cooper was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on September 29, 2005. He lived only 73 days more and passed away on December 10, 2005. His oncologist said he bravely fought a horrible illness and will be missed by many. He worked for the St. Jude Showcase of Dogs every October since it's beginning 10 years ago and the Showcase in October of 2006 will be dedicated to his memory because without his efforts, the Showcase wouldn't be what it is today. His MOS was helicopter repairer, he served with 409TH TRANS DET, 174TH AHC, 14TH AVN BN, 17TH AVN. He arrived in Vietnam on April 30, 1967, and died from multiple fragmentation wounds in Quang Ngai Province, South Vietnam on June 24, 1967. |

Thomas L. KELLY Thomas L. Kelly, 66, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2011 at Methodist North Hospital. Mr. Kelly was a retired business agent for Teamsters Local 667. He was also a veteran of VietNam and a Mason and belonged to the Scottish Rite and Shriners. He is survived by his wife, Jamie Kelly of Bartlett; his daughter, and son-in-law, Kristen and Brian Hendren of Lakeland, and his brother, David Kelly of Memphis. |

William T. "Tommy" MARTIN William Thomas "Tommy" Martin was born November 12, 1944 in Memphis, TN. He lost his battle with cancer on April 22, 2004. Tommy Martin was my father and is missed dearly by those who knew him. He married Glenda Smith who graduated from Overton High as well in 1964 and they had 2 children, a son, Tommy Martin and daughter, Connie (Martin) Sturm. He also had 2 grandchildren, Justin and Joshua Sturm. He was a Memphis Police Officer for many years before he retired. Upon his retirement, he moved to Burlison, Tennessee, where he lived until he was diagnosed with cancer. He was surrounded by family, friends and former co-workers from the Memphis Police Department when he passed away. Karl MASHBURN Died November 4, 2007, in McKenzie. He was born in Memphis, son of the late Leon and Rheba Grace McDaniel Mashburn Manning who survives. Mr. Mashburn attended Union University and Memphis State University with a B.A. Major in Psychology and Sociology and received his M.S.W. from the University of Georgia. He served as the first director of the Madison County Juvenile Group Home, was Director of Children and Youth Services of Jackson Mental Health Center (now Pathways) in Jackson and later Paris, TN and served other positions in Psychiatric Social Work. Mr. Mashburn was an ordained Baptist Minister and has served several pastorates. He was a member of Englewood Baptist Church. |

Marsha MAUCK Heidbrink Marsha Heidbrink, the owner of Memphis Marsha’s Art Gallery & Classes and longtime artist and art supporter, died June 22, 2011, at Southern Kentucky Rehabilitation Hospital. She was 64 and had been battling cancer since August. Marsha Heidbrink became a gallery director at WKU and the Capitol Arts Center. She also helped start Lot 916 before opening Memphis Marsha’s, said Lynn Robertson, Capitol Arts Alliance gallery director. Rowe said she traveled with Marsha Heidbrink to various places, supporting each other and her passion. “It was about keeping that spark alive in people’s interest in the arts,” she said. “I’m going to miss her friendship. I’m going to miss my friend.” Marsha Heidbrink is one of four artists featured in the exhibit “Untraditional Kentucky.” in July 2011 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. |

She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Sherry will be greatly missed by all of us who love and adore her. |

Ronald MYERS Ronald L. Myers, 65, of Burke, VA, died on Tuesday July 6 at Methodist Hospital in Memphis after a long illness. Ron was born in Memphis and graduated from Overton H.S. and Memphis State University (B.S. ‘67). He worked for Memphis City Schools before joining the U.S. Navy in 1972 as a Naval Flight Officer. He retired from the Navy in 1995 as a Commander. After the Navy, he began working in the Fairfax County (VA) schools and obtained his M.A. Ed from George Washington University (’99). He retired from the school system (Holmes Middle School) in 2008. He is survived by his wife Kay and three sons, Derek, Brandon, and Randall; his sister Mrs. Sandra M. Lynch of Carrollton, TX and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother Louise Sutton Myers and father A.J. Myers of Memphis. \ |

Tommy K. Starnes Tommy K. Starnes, died Thursday, October 21, 2010 at his home. He was retired from Goldsmith's Department Store after 25 years of service and continued working in that industry for many years. Mr. Starnes is survived by his wife of 43 years, Donna Starnes; daughters, Stephanie Starnes Burton (Charles) of Cordova, Kathleen Starnes of Germantown and son Thomas Kevin Starnes (Karin) of Collierville; grandchildren, Andrew and Lauren Starnes and Rebekka and Matthew Burton. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Nicklaus and Blaire Elizabeth Burton. |

James Richard TOMLINSON James Richard Tomlinson, 65, passed away July 28, 2011. Richard graduated from Overton High School and Memphis State University. He was an outstanding athlete. His first career was as a high school football coach, for which he was recognized as Reelfoot Conference Coach of the Year in 1975. He went on to a successful career in sales with LoneStar Industries. Richard was preceded in death by his father, W. E. Tomlinson, and brother, Bill Tomlinson. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Drenda, his mother and her husband, Edwynia and George Walker, his daughters, Wesley Tomlinson and Susan Schmidt, his son-in-law David Schmidt, and his beloved grandsons, Patrick and Walker Schmidt. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, August 1 at Germantown United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow. Memorials may be sent to Germantown United Methodist Church, to the Caregivers or Missions funds.

William "Bill" WEATHERRED, JR. Bill passed away at his home in Alamo, TN on Monday, August 10, 2009. A native of Memphis, Bill was a graduate of Overton High School and Memphis State University, receiving both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, and was a charter member of Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. He was a senior research technologist for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for many years, and for the past 14 years he was a professor of anatomy and physiology at Lambuth University in Jackson, TN. He also taught at Dyersburg State University. Bill served in the US Army from 1967-1969. His sisters Jan Weatherred and Susan Adkins, all of Memphis, are also graduates of Overton. |

Arthur M. "Mickey" WOOD Arthur Murray Wood is on the Vietnam Wall at Panel 8E, line 102. He was a Private First Class in the US Army. He was an infantry man with C TRP, 3RD SQDN, 4TH CAVALRY, 25TH INF DIV. His tour in Vietnam began on April 23, 1966, and died from gun or small arms fire in South Vietnam on June 27, 1966, two months after arriving in Vietnam.

Larry W. WOOD Larry died in an accident July 17, 2007 in Erie, PA. He was an over-the-road driver for Yellow Freight for 10 years. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Audrey Wood; children, Tim Wood (Angie), Darla Mangold (Will); and grandson, Spencer Morgan. He served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of the Teamsters Union for over 30 years and a Mason with the Unity Lodge #95.
