Joyce died September 9, 2011, at the age of 67. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Arwood, mother, Wilma, father, Raymond Bryant, and brother Sherman Bryant.

Billy BUCHANAN

I was married to Billy Buchanan for 19 years.  The most wonderful husband, father and best friend a lady could ever ask to have.  As all of you know Billy was that person.  He left us way too young and left me with God’s greatest gift:  Three wonderful children; Jason, Dallan and Crystal.  We miss him dearly and love him more and more everyday. -- Shirley Payne

Jerri Sue Carter Strickland died June 16, 1990 at Baptist Memorial Hospital. She had one child, Gerald P. Strickland, who lives in Memphis.

Judith Gail CHEESEMAN Almy

Judi and her husband William Almy had five children. Judi was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1975. In spite of a number of kinds of treatment, she died in 1994.

Larry W. COOPER

Larry Cooper was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on September 29, 2005. He lived only 73 days more and passed away on December 10, 2005. His oncologist said he bravely fought a horrible illness and will be missed by many. He worked for the St. Jude Showcase of Dogs every October since it's beginning 10 years ago and the Showcase in October of 2006 will be dedicated to his memory because without his efforts, the Showcase wouldn't be what it is today. Thomas Morton DICKINSON

Thomas Morton Dickinson is on the Vietnam Wall on Panel 22E, line 057. He was a  SP4 (Specialist 4) in the US Army.  His MOS was helicopter repairer, he served with 409TH TRANS DET, 174TH AHC, 14TH AVN BN, 17TH AVN.  He arrived in Vietnam on April 30, 1967, and died from multiple fragmentation wounds in Quang Ngai Province, South Vietnam on June 24, 1967.

Jones Barnett HUSKEY Jr

He graduated from Memphis State University in 1972 where he received a law degree and began practicing law in Memphis. He moved to Houston during the 1970’s and was employed by Victor Blaine & Associates for a number of years until relocating his practice to Galveston. He was a criminal lawyer for many years in the Houston-Galveston area.

He married Vashti Roberts Huskey in 1982 where they spent the next 25 years camping, traveling to Jamaica, taking cruises and wringing the joy out of every moment in their lives until her untimely death in December 2005.

Jennie JONES Johnson

Jennie graduated early and so is not in the Yearbook. She married Nick Johnson. They moved to Wisconsin in 1964. Jennie died in 2003.

Thomas L. KELLY

Thomas L. Kelly, 66, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2011 at Methodist North Hospital. Mr. Kelly was a retired business agent for Teamsters Local 667. He was also a veteran of VietNam and a Mason and belonged to the Scottish Rite and Shriners. He is survived by his wife, Jamie Kelly of Bartlett; his daughter, and son-in-law, Kristen and Brian Hendren of Lakeland, and his brother, David Kelly of Memphis.

William Michael McKINLEY

Died December 2, 2006 in Memphis. Bll was retired from the FBI. He left behind a loving wife, Linda, four children and their spouses, and 10 grandchildren, all in Memphis.

William T. "Tommy" MARTIN

William Thomas "Tommy" Martin was born November 12, 1944 in Memphis, TN.  He lost his battle with cancer on April 22, 2004.  Tommy Martin was my father and is missed dearly by those who knew him.  He married Glenda Smith who graduated from Overton High as well in 1964 and they had 2 children, a son, Tommy Martin and daughter, Connie (Martin) Sturm.  He also had 2 grandchildren, Justin and Joshua Sturm.  He was a Memphis Police Officer for many years before he retired.  Upon his retirement, he moved to Burlison, Tennessee, where he lived until he was diagnosed with cancer.  He was surrounded by family, friends and former co-workers from the Memphis Police Department when he passed away.  Many who knew him, knew of his wonderful sense of humor......and he had that right up until his final days.  I love you Daddy and you are terribly missed. -- submitted by Connie Martin Sturm

Karl MASHBURN

Died November 4, 2007, in McKenzie. He was born in Memphis, son of the late Leon and Rheba Grace McDaniel Mashburn Manning who survives. Mr. Mashburn attended Union University and Memphis State University with a B.A. Major in Psychology and Sociology and received his M.S.W. from the University of Georgia. He served as the first director of the Madison County Juvenile Group Home, was Director of Children and Youth Services of Jackson Mental Health Center (now Pathways) in Jackson and later Paris, TN and served other positions in Psychiatric Social Work. Mr. Mashburn was an ordained Baptist Minister and has served several pastorates. He was a member of Englewood Baptist Church.

Marsha MAUCK Heidbrink

Marsha Heidbrink, the owner of Memphis Marsha’s Art Gallery & Classes and longtime artist and art supporter, died June 22, 2011, at Southern Kentucky Rehabilitation Hospital. She was 64 and had been battling cancer since August.  
“She has touched many people’s lives. Her vehicle for doing that was art,” said Delaire Rowe, VSA Arts of Kentucky executive director. “She spent a lot of time creating opportunities for others (in Bowling Green and southcentral Kentucky).”

Marsha Heidbrink became a gallery director at WKU and the Capitol Arts Center. She also helped start Lot 916 before opening Memphis Marsha’s, said Lynn Robertson, Capitol Arts Alliance gallery director.

Rowe said she traveled with Marsha Heidbrink to various places, supporting each other and her passion.  “It was about keeping that spark alive in people’s interest in the arts,” she said. “I’m going to miss her friendship. I’m going to miss my friend.”

Marsha Heidbrink is one of four artists featured in the exhibit “Untraditional Kentucky.” in July 2011 in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Sherry Lynn Moore McClain Long December 19, 1946 - September 19, 2011. She is survived by her husband Jerry Wayne Long of Grenada, Mississippi; her father Howard Moore and brother Gary Moore; daughter, Tina McClain Wardlaw of Olive Branch, son, Tony McClain of Byhalia, daughters, Lori Long Keenum of Marks, MS, and Lindsey Long Murphree of Huntsville, AL; 10 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, family and many friends.

Sherry M. Cook. Wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend beloved by all who knew her. Her big smile always broad and beautiful.   Sherry leaves her husband of 44 years Wayne U. Cook; her daughter, Rachel Cook Weeks; three grandchildren, Madison Taylor Weeks, Hayden Tanner Weeks, and Carys Renee Weeks; her son-in- law, Brad W. Weeks, all of Nashville, Tennessee; her mother Mildred Morlan of Memphis, and three sisters, Bronwein Stevens, Charlene Ulander, Doreen Dundas; and a brother Mark Morlan, all of Memphis. She was a member of Germantown Baptist Church.  Sherry graduated from Overton High School in 1963. She graduated from Memphis State University in 1968 with a degree in Marketing. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Sherry will be greatly missed by all of us who love and adore her.

Ronald MYERS

Ronald L. Myers, 65, of Burke, VA, died on Tuesday July 6 at Methodist Hospital in Memphis after a long illness. Ron was born in Memphis and graduated from Overton H.S. and Memphis State University (B.S. ‘67). He worked for Memphis City Schools before joining the U.S. Navy in 1972 as a Naval Flight Officer. He retired from the Navy in 1995 as a Commander. After the Navy, he began working in the Fairfax County (VA) schools and obtained his M.A. Ed from George Washington University (’99). He retired from the school system (Holmes Middle School) in 2008. He is survived by his wife Kay and three sons, Derek, Brandon, and Randall; his sister Mrs. Sandra M. Lynch of Carrollton, TX and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother Louise Sutton Myers and father A.J. Myers of Memphis. \

Tommy K. Starnes

Tommy K. Starnes, died Thursday, October 21, 2010 at his home. He was retired from Goldsmith's Department Store after 25 years of service and continued working in that industry for many years. Mr. Starnes is survived by his wife of 43 years, Donna Starnes; daughters, Stephanie Starnes Burton (Charles) of Cordova, Kathleen Starnes of Germantown and son Thomas Kevin Starnes (Karin) of Collierville; grandchildren, Andrew and Lauren Starnes and Rebekka and Matthew Burton. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Nicklaus and Blaire Elizabeth Burton.

James Richard TOMLINSON

William "Bill" WEATHERRED, JR.

Bill passed away at his home in Alamo, TN on Monday, August 10, 2009. A native of Memphis, Bill was a graduate of Overton High School and Memphis State University, receiving both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, and was a charter member of Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. He was a senior research technologist for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for many years, and for the past 14 years he was a professor of anatomy and physiology at Lambuth University in Jackson, TN. He also taught at Dyersburg State University. Bill served in the US Army from 1967-1969. His sisters Jan Weatherred and Susan Adkins, all of Memphis, are also graduates of Overton.

Sherry Webb Stepherson passed away in October 2008 at her home in Euless, Texas (which is a suburb of Dallas).  She lived here with her son Jay, daugheter -in-law Kelley and two grandchildren. 

Wiley W. WHEELER

Attended Sea Isle, Colonial Junior High, and Overton. Left school before graduation. Died in Oklahoma of a heart attack about 2002. Married, no children. Wayne McMillan says, "When at Colonial, Wiley was 6' 3 or 4 and weighted 270. He was a big guy."

Jack Ames WHITAKER

Died in 2004 of Lou Gehrig's disease. He owned Jack's Bar-B-Q Rib Shack, which is still owned by his daughter.

Arthur M. "Mickey" WOOD

Arthur Murray Wood is on the Vietnam Wall at Panel 8E, line 102. He was a Private First Class in the US Army.  He was an infantry man with C TRP, 3RD SQDN, 4TH CAVALRY, 25TH INF DIV.  His tour in Vietnam began on April 23, 1966, and died from gun or small arms fire in South Vietnam on June 27, 1966, two months after arriving in Vietnam.

His greatest passions were bowling, golf, and anything outdoors - especially "just a swangin'". He leaves his wife of 41 years, Joan Robertson Zimmerman of Cordova; two daughters Ginger Zimmerman of Hanovar, MA, and Tracie Zimmerman of Memphis; his sister Shirley Bowser of PA; and mother-in-law Virginia Robertson of Madison, MS.
